Are You Searching For Happiness?

I was watching a series on Netflix the other day…

which is what triggered the writing of this post.

It’s about one man’s search for happiness.

He tells his story of how he’s suffered with depression for a lifetime.

And he’s continually on this quest of his…

in ‘search’ of happiness.

Maybe you can relate.

This guy is seriously wealthy.

He can buy literally anything he wants.

Yet he still gets these frequent bouts of depression.

Why is that?

I really don’t know.

You can only get a little snapshot of someone's life even from a documentary.

And there is likely more than one reason for his suffering.

Rarely is just one thing the cause of something else…

there are nearly always multiple variables.

But here’s my take on it…

perhaps his ‘search’ for happiness is causing the unhappiness and depression.

If you’re forever searching…

you’re rarely in the moment.

And from my experience…

only when you’re ‘in the moment’...

do you experience contentment.

Notice I used the word contentment and not happiness.

I dislike the words happiness or happy…

and rarely if ever use those two words.

For me…

contentment is a much nicer word.

For me it means present in the moment.

Because that’s where you find contentment.

It’s a feeling of being at ease.

It’s where you’re not worried or concerned about anything else going on in that moment.

And with practice…

you can experience more and more contentment…

more and more frequently.

To put it another way…

happiness is an emotion…

and contentment is a lifestyle.

Happiness is temporary and fleeting.

Contentment can be long-lasting and even dare I say…

permanent.

It’s a choice…

a lifestyle choice.

If you don’t understand that yet…

you’ll come to understand it.

So…

if you’re like this man…

searching for happiness.

Stop for a moment and enjoy what’s going on around you…

what you can see..

smell…

hear…

or feel.

Only then will you find contentment.

You can then practice more of the same…

more frequently…

and you’ll soon find that contentment becomes part of your life…

part of you.

Stop searching…

start enjoying.

When you start being grateful for…

and enjoying the simple thing sin life…

everything starts to change.
